Managing the Probation Period

Supervisors of postdoctoral associates

Setting expectations: Within the first week of hire, supervisors should meet with their postdoctoral associate to set and clarify job expectations.

One-on-one meetings: Throughout the probationary period, frequent one-on-one meetings will help identify training opportunities, and provide opportunity for supervisors to deliver feedback and coaching while the postdoctoral associate learns their new role.

Probationary Review: Before the conclusion of the probationary period (first three months of employment), supervisors determine if the employee is suitable for the role and completes a probationary review.

  • If you have concerns about performance or suitability for the role, contact Human Resources as soon as possible.
  • If the probationary performance is satisfactory, log in to to access the probationary review and assess performance.
  • Schedule a one-on-one meeting to  discuss the probationary review including performance thus far, your expectations going forward and what support you can offer to enable success.
  • Ensure each postdoctoral associate acknowledges the completed assessment.
